Last week I had the opportunity to dive what we believe is the wreck of the John Shaw. I had been diving with my club over the weekend at Sanilac Shores and the went further North with Andrew Johnstone and Jim Sicurella with Jim's boat. He is friends with a dive shop owner who had obtained co-ordinates from some local commercial fishermen. Although he had visited and confirmed the site with a drop camera he had not had an opportunity to dive the site. He very generously provided us with the numbers as he was anxious to get a report on the wreck. To the best of his knowledge nobody had yet been on this site.

The cargo had been salvaged in about 1896 and it was reported they entered the wreck through the side to remove the cargo.

On arriving at the site we were greeted with an amazing view of the wreck on the depthfinder. We dropped a shot line and prepared to dive with a considerable amount of excitement. We were told to expect low visibility but what we were greeted with was at least 30 feet.

We found that the starboard side had been opened up but the port side was still intact as was much of the decking and hatches. The shot line was closer to the bow than the stern but on both dives we concentrated on the stern so I am not sure what condition the bow is in. From the depth finder it would appear to be partially collapsed.

Were we the first to see this wreck since the salvage? I cannot say for sure but the local dive shop owner thinks so.

Here are some bad photos which I hesitate to post but since they may be the only photos of this wreck I will do so.
