Hello,

i am new to diving and am looking to start doing some UW Photography.  I'm getting the Olympus Stylus Tough 6000 P&S.  I was looking at getting the Ikelite Housing and a Strobe.  I am looking for a strobe in the price range of the Ikelite AF-35.  I have seen a lot of mixed reviews on it.  I was also looking at the Olympus UFL-1 Strobe.  I was wondering if anyone has used either or can give me some recommendations.

Thanks
Chris

I've been using Ikelite products for several years and I never had any major problems. I am not photographer but I use Ikelite housing for my video. Ikelite strobes are very popular as well and I never heard any complains.

I have done my fair share of research when it comes to photography equipment. When it comes to strobes, I strongly recommend spending as much as you can afford. The reasoning for this, is that while cameras and housings change fairly quickly, strobes tend not to. So for you to spend the extra bit on a really good strobe/strobes now (even though you may not use it right away to its fullest potential) it will still prove to be very useful in the coming years. Probably saving you a fair bundle. Had I known, I would have done this and saved a boat load.

I second Chris80's points and would add that a good strobe allows you to modify the power settings, which will let you adjust the amount of light for your shot. Photography is so much about light, and underwater, you need to supply pretty much all of it. Being able to control your light source will go a long way toward your enjoyment of the hobby and the quality of your images.

I also would add one more thing: arms for the strobes. Once upon a time, I had short, non-extendable arms. They were not much use for lighting a scene and caused me no end of frustration. The Ultralight arms are nice, allowing you to build length as you can afford / need.

By the way, AquaSub is running an U/W Photography course on Oct 13. I enjoyed it and learned a lot from it. Highly recommend it if you haven't already taken this course.
